Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)

In dentistry, nitrous oxide is the least expensive and least effective method of sedation. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, can help you relax during your dental treatment.

Nitrous oxide can be used alone or in combination with Novocain. For cleanings, many of our patients who are terrified of dental visits use nitrous oxide. If you suffer dental anxiety, nitrous gas can help you relax and enjoy your visit to the dentist.

Who Is Eligible for Sedation at the Dentist?

Sedation is best appropriate for those who have a genuine fear or anxiety about coming to the dentist. People who may benefit from sedation dentistry include those who are/have:

• Poor threshold for discomfort.  
• Sensitive gag reflex.
• Uncomfortable and can't sit still in the dentist's chair.
• Have teeth that are extremely sensitive.
• Require a significant amount of dental work to be accomplished.

If a youngster is afraid of going to the dentist or refuses to participate during the visit, sedation may also be used. Nitrous oxide is generally considered safe in children, and it can be administered by almost any dentist. Only a limited number of pediatric dentists are trained to administer oral sedation to youngsters. When administered in the recommended dose for the child's age and weight, oral sedation can be considered safe.
